Chapter Eleven

Lola

“I can’t see anything,” were the first words I heard. “Lola?”

“I’m here,” I answered, reaching out blindly as my own vision slowly returned. “I’m right here, Elena. Is your vision starting to come back?”

Elena was standing a few steps away, staring straight ahead and cringing as the cold wind whipped around us.

“I… I think so. Yeah, it is. Okay, thank God.”

“Thank God,” I echoed. But I only had a moment of relief before a new realization hit. We were all alone on what appeared to be the side of a mountain. A rocky, charred mountain that was set against a blood-red sky. Looking down, whatever land might have been below us was obscured by haze and smoke.

“Are we in hell?” Elena’s mouth fell open as she took in our frightening surroundings. “I’m scared, Lola. This doesn’t look safe.” Her voice was rising with each word until she sounded nearly hysterical. “You told me we’d be safe.”

“We will be,” I said, hugging her tight and hoping my words were true. “Calx will be here any second, and then he’ll take us to…”

My words were drowned out by a burst of what felt like static electricity and a blast of heat that almost knocked us over. A weird buzzing sound filled my ears and then, just as suddenly, it all went away as Calx appeared right next to us.

He staggered and winced, then shook his head as his dark eyes focused on me. “My love. You made it.”

“We all made it, thank goodness,” I said, finally able to take my first deep breath since we’d arrived on Petera. “Did they hurt you?”

“Nothing that will bother me for more than a few hours,” he answered, wrapping his huge arms around me and Elena, and pulling us close. “Welcome to Petera. What do you think?”

“It’s…” I didn’t want to lie, but I was afraid to hurt his feelings with the truth.

“It’s scary,” Elena finished for me, guessing what his question meant. “And smoky.”

My little sister was blunt in her honesty, but she wasn’t wrong. The spot where we’d landed really did look like a literal hellscape.

“The portal dropped us in a rough spot,” he nodded, seemingly acknowledging her critique of his homeland. “Don’t worry, though. We might not have the lush greenery of your planet, but it does get somewhat better than where we are now.”

“Oh, thank God,” I exhaled, leaning my head against his solid chest. “I have faith in you, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little worried when we got here.”

“No need to worry, my love. We aren’t too far from the Three Spires, my family’s ancestral home.”

“Is there a fireplace there?” I asked, huddling as close to Calx’s warm body as I could as the wind turned cooler. “I don’t need much, but a fireplace sounds heavenly right now.”

He grinned and rubbed a big hand up and down my back. “Thirty-six fireplaces in the main castle. Can’t say I’ve ever counted how many there are in the other two castles, but I promise I’ll keep you warm.
